The Ganga River, also
known as the Ganges, is one of the most significant rivers in India,
both spiritually and geographically. Here's where it starts and ends:
Starting Point:
- Source: The Ganga originates at the Gangotri
Glacier in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. The specific location is
known as Gaumukh, which is about 19 km from the pilgrimage town of
Gangotri.
- Name at Origin: Initially, it is called the Bhagirathi
River until it meets the Alaknanda River at Devprayag. After this
confluence, it is officially known as the Ganga.
Ending Point:
- Mouth: The Ganga ends in the Bay of Bengal,
forming the Sundarbans Delta, which is the largest river delta in
the world.
- Final Name: As it approaches the Bay of
Bengal, the river splits into distributaries. The main branch flowing into
Bangladesh is called the Padma, while another branch in India is
called the Hooghly River.
Length:
- The Ganga flows for about 2,525 kilometers (1,569
miles), traversing through the Indian states of Uttarakhand, Uttar
Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal, before entering Bangladesh.
Key Points of Significance:
- The river is revered in Hinduism as a goddess and
considered a purifying force.
- Major cities along its course include Rishikesh, Haridwar, Varanasi, Allahabad (Prayagraj), Patna, and Kolkata.
